Fluoride
Did you know that rinsing with fluoride — a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay — also helps keep your teeth healthy and strong? Fluoride is effective in preventing cavities by coating your teeth and preventing plaque from building up and hardening on the tooth's surface.
Types of Fluoride
Systemic fluoride is ingested, usually through a public water supply. While teeth are forming under the gums, fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, making it stronger and more resistant to cavities.
Topical fluoride is applied directly to help prevent cavities on teeth already in the mouth. It is delivered through toothpaste, mouthwash, and professional fluoride applications at your dental visit.
Professional Fluoride Treatments
A fluoride treatment in our office takes just a few minutes. After the treatment, you may be asked not to rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes to allow your teeth to absorb the fluoride fully. Depending on your oral health, you may benefit from a fluoride treatment every 3, 6, or 12 months.
When choosing an at-home fluoride product — toothpaste or mouthwash — always look for the ADA seal of acceptance to ensure safety and effectiveness.
