Nightguards

A custom-fitted nightguard is the simplest, most effective protection against grinding — and the key to pain-free mornings.

Nightguards

If you often wake up with jaw pain, earaches, or headaches, or if you find yourself clenching or grinding your teeth, you may have a common condition called bruxism. A custom-made nightguard from our office is one of the most effective and non-invasive ways to protect your teeth and relieve your symptoms.

What Causes Bruxism?

The causes of bruxism are not entirely known, but several factors may be involved: stressful situations at home, school, or work; problems sleeping; an abnormal bite; and crooked or missing teeth. Many people do not know they grind their teeth, as it often occurs during sleep.

If not corrected, bruxism can lead to broken teeth, cracked teeth, damaged restorations, and even tooth loss.

Types of Mouthguards

There are three basic types of mouthguards:

  • Pre-made (stock) nightguards — Available over the counter; least effective due to poor fit
  • "Boil-and-bite" nightguards — Better fit than stock, still limited
  • Custom-made nightguards from our office — The best option: tear-resistant, comfortable, well-fitted, and easy to keep clean

A custom nightguard is made from a precise impression of your teeth — it fits perfectly, protects fully, and doesn't interfere with breathing or sleep.
